What are the benefits of tea….my new favorite drink

Recently I’ve enjoyed having some tea in the later afternoon. I tried a couple different types of tea then I decided to research what are the benefits of tea. I had some special flavors that I prefer for health reasons like white, green or black tea. And I tried using the loose tea and the teabags. There are many different options when choosing a tea and I will share them with you here. Let’s first learn about the history and legends of discovering tea. History of Tea: Legends from India and China

The history of tea dates back to ancient China around 2737 B.C.E. when an emporer, Shen Nong, mistakenly discovered it. Shen Nung was a skilled ruler and scientist when he was boiling tea in his garden and a leaf from a wild tea tree fell into his boiling pot of water. He liked the infused water so much that he decided to do research on the plant further. During his research he discovered medicinal properties linked to tea.


Now there are also tea discoveries attributed in India when Prince Bodhi-Dharma an Indian saint founded the Zen school of Buddhism. In the year 520 he left India to preach in China. To prove some Zen principles he vowed to meditate for 9 years without sleep and then towards the end of his meditation he fell asleep. When he woke up he was so confused that he cut off his eyelids and threw them to the ground. Legend has it that a tea plant sprung up on the spot to sanctify his sacrifice.

Whichever the legends, the origin of teas roots proves difficult and could be its own class history lesson in itself for maybe another blog post.   Health benefits of tea: Tips and tea variety suggestions There are many benefits of tea and I’ve chosen to identify some of them here:
  • Tea may help reduce risk of heart disease,cancer & type 2 diabetes-I suggest Matcha tea for this
  • Tea contains antioxidants and may protect against osteoporosis-especially White tea because its less processed
  • Tea may boost the immune system and prevent respiratory illness-Try Holy Basil or Tulsi
  • Tea may help prevent bone loss and is rich in vitamin C-I suggest Moringa tea for this
  • Tea may boost exercise endurance and improve overall health-I suggest Green tea
  • Tea may provide some minor protection from UV rays and increase blood flow-I suggest green tea
Types of tea: There are about 6 types

There are teas that have high concentrations of antioxidants. They are green tea, white tea, black and oolong teas. And then there are other teas made from fruits, herbs, and seeds which have fewer antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances that can prevent or slow damage to cells caused by free radicals. There are more than 1500 varieties worldwide.

The most interesting fact is that all true teas come from the same plant, Camellia Sinensis. Each type is unique due to its processing method. Something to note is tea is fermented/oxidized by using a hot humid environment. The tea leaves are spread on bamboo racks to wither for a few hours immediately after they are harvested. They are rolled and placed into a cloth-lined bamboo basket once they become soft enough.
  • Black tea-most common tea
  • White tea-the least processed tea
  • Green tea-the oldest tea
  • Oolong Tea-between green and black tea
  • Puerh-dark semi-rare tea made from a larger leaf strain
  • Herbal Tea-known as Tisane tea that does not contain any leaves

How to brew tea: Tips to making a proper cup

  • Use filtered water-The better the water the better the tea will taste
  • Set the correct water temperature-Use an electric kettle with temperature setting
  • Steep for the correct amount of time-Use a timer, usually 3-5 minutes depending on type of tea
  • Use loose tea-The best tea to steep due to its high quality
  • Warm the teapot-Add hot water to the teapot to warm it up then swirl it around and dump it out
Conclusion So what are the benefits of tea?  There are many from preventing diseases to helping with a nagging cough.  And there are many uses and types available on the market.  I prefer organic loose tea.  My favorite is pomegranate or white peach!  Try it from Art of Tea, handcrafted in Los Angeles.

Great facts backed by medical professionals

Today I had the great pleasure of listening to Ocean and John Robbins interview medical professionals. The Food Revolution Summit 2020 kicked off today. I was able to listen to (3) 50 minute interview discussions with follow up Q & A. The facts presented are both reassuring and informative during this unfamiliar event in our world.

Health and Love in the Time of Covid-19

The first interview was with Matt McCarthy MD. Dr McCarthy has been working on the front lines in a very large hospital in New York. He’s one of the top infectious disease specialists in the world. He discussed the topic of transferring infectious illness from animal to human at the Chinese wet markets. He recommended shut down of these wet markets as the best solution or testing the blood samples of the animals which involves a huge expense and time effort. Dr. McCarthy suggests a plant based diet which would help the obesity challenges in the world today and help the animals. People with poor health are at greater risk for a bad outcome due to the virus. Aside from touching on multiple other subjects he spoke of Coronavirus as a mutate virus, antibodies testing, antibiotics and putting fear into perspective. Food, Health, and the Coronavirus

Secondly, Michael Klaper, MD discusses how much healthy food choices matter. He has focused on bringing nutrition education into medical school studies and had written several books. During the summit interview he discussed eating healthy and how important it is to combat viruses. From his experience the diseases he has seen reversed have been due to a plant based diet. He touched on the lungs and keeping your lungs moving by doing breathing exercises. The vitamins and supplements available today are going to help build up the immune system. Some of those he talked about to learn more about are zinc, vitamin D, vitamin C, selenium and mushrooms. He suggested to stop eating animals because it would help so much. His pride in health care professionals heroic acts during this pandemic is beyond expected. He hopes to bring love, harmony and healing into this world to make it a better place.

It All Starts in your Gut

Lastly, Dr. Zach Bush shared the truths about food, lifestyle and how environment shapes your brain, mood, immune system and life expectancy. His mission is to encourage a radical change in big farming, pharma, and western medicine. He gave some tips for strengthening the gut to include fermented foods like miso soup and that probiotics may not be the best choice for all people. There are many more facts discussed by Dr. Bush to be aware of like gluten and glyphosate. That in the US it’s the glyphosate that is so harmful and that Europe is much more free of glyphosate. If we get rid of glyphosate then our bodies can handle gluten so much better. I’ve only touched on a very small portion of his beneficial information. 10 foods you should eat everyday… to feel great!

Today I want to discuss the 10 foods you should eat everyday. On Monday I received my produce box delivered to my front door. It is always such an exciting day when my box gets delivered! Here’s a photo of it before everyone tore it apart completely.

Let’s start with the top 5 foods to eat everyday….

My box contained 2 of the top items listed on the chart, leafy dark greens and berries. Some of my favorites to enjoy everyday. I love making salads with greens and cucumbers like here in the photo. The other items on the chart are staples that I usually keep in the house, beans and nuts. All so good for you for many reasons. Greens great to block early cancer from developing. Berries which I like to add to my Vitamix juicer are great for overall health and specifically brain & heart health. Blueberries and strawberries came in my produce box but not pictured. Mushrooms are third on the chart and provide good brain health along with providing anticancer effect against various types of cancer. Next are beans which are great for decreased risk of cancer, heart disease and Alzheimers. Fifth on the list and definitely my favorite top 10 foods you should eat everyday, nuts/seeds a natural anti-inflammatory and great snack for in between meals.

Now let’s discuss 5 more from the chart…I love these!

My box contained 3 of the next 5 listed. First the foundation of alot of meals, onions and garlic which supply anticancer, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. Second, tomatoes, they are high in the carotenoid lycopene and help protect against cardiovascular disease. I use them in so many of my salads. Third, cabbage and cauliflower which have been found to decrease rates of various types of cancer. I like making cauliflower rice and adding it to any meal. Now lets talk about Turmeric, a beneficial spice known to reduce inflammation and blood glucose levels. It’s become so popular now they make tea with turmeric in it. Speaking of tea! Tea is last on the list of 10 foods you should eat everyday. So rich in antioxidants, tea comes in many flavors and has been linked to improve cognitive function.

10 foods to avoid that are damaging to your health…

These 10 foods are damaging in excessive quantities. Now having some once in a while isn’t going to harm you but it’s definitely recommended avoiding them. They are: sugar/artificial sweeteners, alcohol, fried foods, white flour, processed meats, soda, commercial baked goods, grain fed red meat, dairy, and high salt foods. It is important to limit the intake of these foods. It explains them more in detail on the chart.

Keeping veggies fresh longer – Let’s talk about the green veggies!

Let’s talk again about keeping veggies fresh longer and focus on green veggies! They always taste so much better fresh and when I eat healthy I feel great.

How to keep lettuce fresh longer.  It’s so much better!

When I buy lettuce at a store nearby my house I notice how fresh the lettuce is. It’s more fresh than other stores that I’ve gone to. So I’m wondering how are they keeping veggies fresh longer? I decided to play reporter and ask the produce person. There was a mixture of reasons but the one I want to focus on is storage in the fridge. I talked about this in a previous post. I briefly discussed potatoes, garlic, onions, bananas, tomatoes, peaches, mushrooms, apples, cantaloupe, apricots and honeydew. Today I will focus on green veggies and the specific way to keeping veggies fresh longer! So to keep lettuce fresh longer in the fridge follow these steps:
  1. wash and remove any damaged leaves
  2. dry the lettuce thoroughly in a salad spinner or paper towel
  3. wrap lettuce in a dry paper towel
  4. place lettuce in a plastic bag vented a little or storage container designed for produce
  5. store lettuce in the crisper drawer

How to keep broccoli fresh longer.

  1. Rinse well as soon as you get broccoli home
  2. Lossely wrap in paper towels and store in fridge
  3. Keep air flowing so do not seal in bag
  4. Put in the fridge asap and eat within 3 days

How to keep cucumber fresh longer. This is an easy one!

  1. Rinse well
  2. Wrap individually in a paper towel
  3. Store in a plastic bag in fridge and eat within 10 days

Keeping veggies fresh longer is key to healthy eating!

How to keep fruits and veggies fresh longer

Now that I’m limiting my trips to the grocery store, we are having a fresh produce box delivered home. The box came with tons of yummy fresh produce so now I’m challenged with how to keep fruits and veggies fresh longer. It would be a shame for any of it to go bad and remember eat healthy feel great. Be aware, certain fruits and veggies release ethylene which speed up the ripening process.

Here are some ways:

Use produce bags: keep fruit and veggies in a breathable storage bag like these pictured below:




Be cautious of cold sensitive produce like potatoes, garlic and onions. They do well in cool dark environment and not in the fridge.

The ethylene emitter produce like avocados, bananas, peaches and tomatoes need to be stored on the counter until ripe and then put in the fridge to lengthen shelf life. Store separate to keep from ripening too fast.

Do not wash mushrooms. Keep them in a sealed container in the fridge unwashed.

Keep apples, cantaloupe, apricots and honeydew in the fridge but separate from greens to prevent ethylene wilting the greens.

If you wish to ripen bananas quickly, separate individual fruits from the bunch.  Keeping the bunch together will slow the ripening process down.
