What Is The Best Maca Powder?
What is the best maca powder? Another adaptogenic herb? YES, maca is on the long list of adaptogenic herbs which helps the body naturally return balance and build resilience during times of stress. The three types of stress it can help with are emotional, physical and mental. The maca plant, known scientifically as Lepidium meyenii, is sometimes referred to as Peruvian ginseng.
According to www.themacaexperts.com, Maca works in the endocannabinoid system of the brain and body. The main medicinal properties can be attributed to bio-active chemicals called macamides and macaenes. These metabolites are completely unique to maca and are responsible for most of its adaptogenic activity.

Maca is grown in the high Andes mountains of Peru in harsh conditions at very high altitudes above 13,000 feet. Peruvian people have been using maca for culinary and medicinal purposes for thousands of years. Maca is a cruciferous vegetable relative of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and kale. It looks similar to a turnip or parsnip and grows in the ground. It grows in 3 varieties from the same seed: red, black and yellow which is the most abundant. Yellow is used for everyday uses whereas red and black are for specific medicinal uses. Yellow grows more abundantly in the crop equaling about 60%-70%, black is 10% and red is 20-30%. Learning about maca is so interesting and there are so many amazing facts.
I want to review what is the best maca powder because it has such amazing benefits and it happens to be the second ingredient in my favorite superfood powder, Moon Balance. I can honestly call it the best maca and I’m not talking about macaroons. I’m talking about maca root powder. The difference between Moon Balance and other maca powders is that it’s combined with other superfood benefits like Beetroot, Shatavari and Baobab.
Benefits of Maca Powder
In a pilot study done on Lepidium meyenii (maca), Maca can reduce depression and blood pressure in postmenopausal women. But there are many other benefits that are listed below:
- Increase Energy Level and Athletic Performance
- Helps Balance Hormones and Treat Acne
- Treat Menopause and PMS
- Boosts Fertility and Libido
- Improve Mood and Mental Health
- Treat Neurological and Brain Disorders
- Treat thyroid dysfunction
- Treat Fatigue and Stress
What is Maca Used For?
Maca is one of those foods that everyone should know about. Its a Peruvian superfood that helps with energy, stamina, libido, moods, and overall well being. Maca is also known to help with fertility, hormone balance, and even treat menopausal symptoms. It’s no wonder why it has become such a popular supplement for people who want to improve their health and fitness levels. If you’re looking for a maca powder that will give you the best results, then this article will tell you everything you need to know about maca powders and how to choose the best one for yourself.
Effectiveness of Maca Powder
The effectiveness of maca powder depends on what kind of maca you buy. There are two main types of maca: red maca and white maca. Red maca is high in antioxidants while white maca is low in antioxidants. White maca contains more nutrients than red maca but it doesn’t contain as much fiber. Both types of maca have been shown to be effective at increasing testosterone levels and improving sexual performance.
Product Overview for Maca Powder
Even though Moon Balance is my favorite superfood to consume maca, I’m including the facts for an organic maca powder that has only maca in it. This gives you options so that you can make the best decisions when purchasing. Maca is available from Thrive Market which is a great membership grocery home delivery service that you can join here. Maca is made from grinding the root of the maca plant into a fine powder. After reading several customer reviews its noted that most people enjoyed the maca powder. It was said that the combination of pepper and butterscotch added a nice addition that is surprisingly tasty. It’s great added into smoothies and desserts. For best effectiveness, consume maca daily for a minimum of 6-12 weeks in the mornings. Store maca in an air tight container avoiding humidity.

I must admit that before reading this article, I had never heard of maca or maca powder before…..ever. After reading your article, I am amazed at how many health benefits maca powder contains. I also love the story of the product as it relates to Peruvian history, and I think it is cool that it grows in three varieties from the same seed. Thank you for sharing this interesting and informative article.
@Michael I’m so glad you enjoyed my article WHAT IS THE BEST MACA POWDER and that you learning something new. I’ve enjoyed learning all about adaptogenic herbs from around the world. Best wishes to you.
I always learn valuable things when I read your posts. I use Maca powder most days in a drink I make with raspberries, blackberries and blueberries along with several powders. I had no idea what adaptogenic herbs were. Fortunately I was able to read an article you had already written about them. The drink I make is rich in micronutrients and antioxidants.
QUESTION: If I were to add one more adaptogenic herb into my daily drink, is there one you would recommend?
I like to add one thing at a time to see if I can tell any difference.
Thanks for another value-add article!
@Glenn thank you for visiting my blog again. It’s fun to learn new things. Great question…I guess it would be helpful to know if you are feeling any symptoms or need improvements in any area. But if you want an adaptogenic herb to add to your drink, I would suggest researching more about Reishi Mushrooms.
I’ve never heard of maca powder, it sounds great I want to try it now!

I have never taken Maca powder before but I have taken it in pill form because I read that it helps with hair loss. I have been wanting to take it in powder form for a while now but I haven’t gotten around to it. The health benefits you listed sound amazing and if it is anything like Ginsgeng, (which I have taken), then it should provide a powerful sense of vitality. Your article just convinced me to buy some and give it a shot. Why is raw Maca harmful? Most of the herbs and vegetables I enjoy are in raw form.
@Dan thank you for visiting my blog today. Maca needs to be cooked to release the medicine and it also has a type of mold on it that needs to be cooked off to eliminate a harmful cancer causing aflatoxins.
I’ve heard of maca powder before but never knew it had so many health benefits. I’ll have to start adding it to my smoothies. Thanks for the great info!
@Lori I’m glad you learned something new from my article. Best wishes for good health.
Another great read Alyse! You are really putting a lot of effort explaining some of the herbs which are still unknown to many people. I never heard of maca before, maybe it’s not so popular in all the region.

Maca literally acts as an energy store for the body. This effect is most visible, even if you suffer from chronic fatigue….However I have heard that Maca root can have side effects if you are already taking some other medicines. This applies to both prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements – Would love to know your thoughts on it ?
@Satz thank you for visiting my blog today and commenting on my article. To answer your question, according to healthline.com, Maca is considered safe for most people, although those with thyroid issues need to be careful. Also women that are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult with their doctors before taking maca. Best wishes for good health!!
