In my opinion, to walk from home is the most convenient and safest for me. 1. Love the article, especially the walking chart. I may have to alter it slightly as I have diabetic neuropathy in my feet. It will just take me longer, that’s all ! All in all, it will be helpful to me nonetheless. Very easy reading. Love it!!

  2. I never thought about so many ways to walk. It actually sounds like fun. The video was good for stay-in-place walking. I also like the “To Lose 1 Pound a Day” plan. I am motivated by plans and structure. It’s kind of like: Day 1/check. Day 2/check, etc.

A friend of mine took the month of July to drink zero alcohol and walk. By the end of the month he was walking 7 mile a day. I think he was able to do that in less than an hour. He’s in his 60’s. He lost a lot of weight and feels great.

Super informative and motivating article. Thank you!

  4. Hi Alyse.
Walking is great, is is part of my exercise routine, even though I go to the gym 4 times a week. Why? Well you already listed 10 benefits. But my main one is “Posture” it helps me to “Stand Up Straight” So I put my shoulders back and away I go, great for the back too. Plus it’s a great exercise for the days when I’m not working out, the recovery days. Or as an extra, wondering through the parks and wilderness amazed at the scenery enjoying life.

  5. This is a great article to get people out walking again and away from that useless TV. Walking is one of the best and safest exercises we can do. I started walking last year and now I am up to running but I could never have gotten there without the baby steps.
I love meeting new people on the trail and sometimes find others to run with.

  6. A great article on walking. I aim to do at least 10,000 steps a day but hate it when I don’t hit that. The last week has seen the weather be not been ideal at all so my walking has suffered.

I love your chart on losing a pound, I have never seen that before and it is great for goal setting in terms of walking.

Its inspired me to get my act together and go for a walk first thing before I do anything else. Hopefully my gym will reopen soon!

  7. Hi Alyse,

One of the most underrated form of weight loss and toning exercise – walking. I truly saw its benefits when I travelled to Vietnam.

My friend and I were on foot most of the time, maybe clocking at least 4km each day. Honestly speaking we came back with leaner legs, all from clocking in the walking hours. Hahaha

Loved your article, we can all benefit from your ideas especially during this time!

    Cheers.

  8. Hi Alyse,
Thanks so much for these awesome tips. I never thought about a neighbourhood club. Might be something I could start!
And mall walking for us here in Northern Canada is great in the winter. We have such a long season… 🙁
I had to giggle when I read about staying off the phone. I don’t know how many times I see people walking while on their phones. Those are accidents waiting to happen, lol.
    Cheers,

  9. Dear Alyse S
You have given me very great ideas about walking from home.

I really like the idea of walking around in the local malls and around the blocks.

I like that you mentioned that walking is a low impact exercise that anyone can do. Infact it’s an exercise that you can do without knowing that you’re exercising.
Window shopping for instance is exercising, so also is walking your beloved dog.

I like that you mentioned the benefits of walking, it makes me have a purpose in mind. I am not only strengthening my heart, boosting my immunity, and losing weight but also improving my mood as walk around the neighbourhood and my local mall, making social connections.

Thank you so much for this helpful piece.

  11. I love the weekly walking tracker. I am a visual person, so being able to see what I have done is awesome. I especially like the mall tip. Most malls do open up early in the morning for the purpose of allowing people to walk. I have smaller children so being in a controlled climate is great. Hopefully, I can get my behind on the move this week.
