How Do You Pronounce Charcuterie Platter?

When telling people about the platters that I’ve been putting together, I find myself stumbling over the word “charcuterie.” The word “charcuterie” is French and refers to a platter of cured meats or cold cuts and cheese. Pronounced “shar-coot-ery,” the concept of the board has evolved overtime to be artistic and extravagant displays of all sorts of foods.

The great thing about charcuterie platters is the fact that you can mix and match the ingredients as much as you like! There are a wide variety of cured meats and even more variations of cheese that you can use. To go along with the theme of Easter, I looked for cheese’s and vegetables that not only went well together, but also added thematic colors to the board.

Easy Charcuterie Board

There is really no right or wrong way to make an easy charcuterie board. There are endless amounts of patterns and designs that you can use! For Easter, I looked for bright or pastel colored foods that worked well individually as well as together. Just like I used heart-shaped cookie cutters to create designs on my Valentine’s Day board, you can add Easter themed pieces on your board as well. Chocolate bunnies or flower designs are great layering pieces to add some extra decoration.

In order to keep thing simple for yourself, most stores have charcuterie board kits that you can buy. These have a small variety of pre-cut meats and cheeses that you can choose from to save some time and money. The meat that I used on this board, for example, came in a pack of three and was cut to the perfect size for my circular board.

Choose a charcuterie board from my below list of the 5 Best Charcuterie Boards of 2023 or click here.

  1. Decide on a board either marble or wood. I made a little plan for how I would lay out my ingredients in advance, but you can play around with the ingredients as you go. If you are using homemade hard-boiled eggs, it’s best if you prepare them beforehand so they have enough time to cook and cool.  Consider using an egg cooker to speed up the process.
  2. Wash and prepare your ingredients. I sliced the carrots in half (keeping them longer) and cut off the excess greens on the edge of the carrots and radishes. I cut the mango-fire cheddar, hard boiled eggs, and kiwi into thin slices as well.
  3. Next, start from the center of your board. For this particular platter, I had a circular bowl of the cranberry orange cheese spread that I placed in the middle. This way, I was able to build outwards in order to make the pattern of the board resemble flower petals.
  4. Place the ingredients around the board. I tried to put complimentary ingredients and flavors near each other. I layered the crackers, cheese, and kiwi slices on top of one another in order to add some depth and design to my board.
  5. I decided to fold the meat slices into fours and prop them up against each other to make the design stand out more.
  6. Lastly, I sprinkled the radishes and boiled eggs with salt and pepper, finishing the design off with some pastel purple flowers around it.

ProteinsOne of the main ingredients you’ll see on charcuterie boards is different kinds of proteins and cured meats. I decided to use salami for its minimal cost but there are a wide variety of meats you can use. Prosciutto, sopressata, pancetta, and other similar options can also be used to add flavor and variety to your charcuterie. I added hard boiled eggs and shelled pistachios for a healthy protein addition.

CheesesIt is very rare to see a charcuterie board that does not have cheese on it. There are so many great cheese options that it was almost hard to pick from! For my board though, I decided to use Mango Fire Cheddar and Cranberry and Orange Cheese Spread. Other well-known alternatives are variations of brie, camembert or cheddars, parmesan or manchego.

Crackers – Crackers are great foundational pieces for your board. They can be paired with your meat and cheese or dipped in hummus. I went for a gluten-free sea salt cracker. I laid the slices of meat, cheese and crackers out along the outside of the board and tried to put each specific flavor next to foods that might pair well with one another!

Fresh and Dried FruitsFruits are a great, healthy addition to a charcuterie board too! I chose kiwi for their vibrant green color. Dried fruits also work well on charcuterie boards! For this one I used dried apricots. Dried peaches, figs, or tomatoes can also be great additions.

Vegetables Although I didn’t have many vegetables on this particular board, they can be great with soft cheeses and spreads. I used vibrant red radishes and rainbow carrots. Celery, asparagus, cucumber or even small pickles can also do the trick.

I’ve attached a quick video below to show the overall process of putting the charcuterie board together. Although I decided on these particular ingredients you could also add or replace these with a wide variety of alternate ingredients. Some examples of substitutions that I found were foods like cucumber, asparagus, green olives, green grapes, and even some Easter candy.

First of all, I can’t believe Easter is just around the corner? I love Easter and I love Spring! Charcuterie boards are so much fun and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like them! I tend to have a hard time making them look pretty so I really appreciate your tips and guidance. I especially like the Pandpal Bamboo board with the cut outs for knives and dipping cups! A decent sized and nice looking board makes all the difference. I think I’m due for an upgrade. Thanks for the inspiration!

  2. Hi Alyse,
I have to say this is the first time I have every seen such a fancy tray of veggies and proteins. So these are call charcuterie boards? They look very nice and have inspired some gift ideas! They certainly are easy enough to create and don’t require much cooking. Personally, I am single and I love to eat healthy! But it gets hard when everyone is having the traditional Ham with all the fixings, loaded with the butters and fats. This gives people like me an alternative to dine on! Thanks for the great idea, and introducing me to charcuterie boards!

    Hi Alyse,

I know this article is based on Easter, and it is now a week later. But, I am going to use the Healthy Easter Charcuterie Board as a great way to make my 15 year old niece happy.

My niece is called Ava and she is becoming an amazing cook. She helps her Mum with the dinner, especially on a Sunday with the roast dinner here in the UK.

But, I need a way to work with her too and showing her your articles is going to be the way for me to do that. Ava will absolutely love it, and could even share these recipes with her mates. Hopefully telling them it was my idea 🙂

I will let you know how it goes with my niece and how happy these recipes make her.

Thank you for sharing and keep up the amazing work.

    All the best,

    Tom

  5. Your charcuterie boards looking incredible! Thank you for the Egg-stra (extra) Easter inspiration of culinary arts goodness! I have always LOVED charcuterie boards personally. I think they look really elegant, and honestly who does not love cheese, fruits/vegetables accompanied by all your favorite meats/ cold cuts!??! They really are a great little snack/ appetizer when you have guests you are entertaining for any event/ dinner. If your gathering is of just a few close friends/ family these boards also pair well with beverages, so if you’re sharing a bottle of wine and just want a little amuse-bouche to go with it, these are perfect for those occasions! Not to mention, they make a beautiful coffee/ dinner table centerpiece for your guests as well. And the options of what you can put on them are endless, and the themes you can put together with them (Easter, Christmas, etc) you can use themed cookie cutters to help plan out the layout of your board etc. Thank you for such an interesting read! 🙂
